About

One site, two halves

Seneca Commons pairs two things that don't usually sit together: free financial calculators, and Sentinel, a live dashboard tracking the structural indicators that precede social rupture. Same site, different tools, same underlying reason — clarity, whether the question is "what will my take-home pay be" or "how fragile does the system look this week."

The name comes from Seneca, the Stoic philosopher who wrote that ruin is rapid — growth builds slowly, collapse arrives fast. "Age of Discord," the phrase on the homepage, names Peter Turchin's term for a period like this one: rising elite competition and falling living standards moving together, the pattern his structural-demographic theory tracks across centuries of historical data.

Seven panels, weekly composite score, all built on live public data — FRED, USGS, RSS newswires — grounded in James Greathouse's own structural-demographic framework, not commentary or prediction.

The framework and the sourcing live in Books — the two works this project is grounded in, plus the reading that shaped it.
